The current 30-day order renewing the state's public health disaster proclamation expires next Sunday. As of last Thursday, Texas has been under the proclamation for a thousand days. Fewer than a dozen states are still under a statewide disaster declaration or public health emergency, which expands the governor's power to respond to disasters quickly. Gov. Greg Abbott can let the latest renewal lapse, or he can renew the proclamation for another 30-days. By that time, the next state legislative session will be underway.
