Republicans are urging Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan not to appoint any Democrats to House committee leadership posts in the upcoming legislative session. In the 2021 session, Phelan appointed 14 Democrats to chair 35 House committees, and he reportedly plans to stick to the bipartisan practice in 2023. This time around, the Texas Republican Party and at least 19 GOP House members are demanding a ban on Democratic-led committees. The state GOP named the chairmanship issue its top priority for the next session.
