A Texas death row inmate is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn his conviction. Areli Escobar claims incompetence at the Austin police crime lab resulted in misleading DNA evidence that implicated him in a 2009 murder. Travis County D-A Jose Garza agrees that Escobar's death sentence was based on faulty results from a troubled crime lab that was later shut down. Garza and Escobar's defense lawyers are calling on the Supreme Court to order a new trial. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals upheld Escobar's conviction in January.
