A team at the San Antonio River Authority plans to reintroduce native freshwater mussels to the San Antonio River. River Authority biologists are working with a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hatchery in Burnet to breed the mussels. The River Authority hopes to release hundreds of them next year in the Mission Reach area of the San Antonio River Walk. Freshwater mussels used to be common in the upper reaches of the San Antonio River. Pollution, development, and channel alterations reduced their numbers.
