Rising Natural Gas Prices Drive Up Texas Home Energy Bills

Texans are seeing higher home electric bills this summer, mostly because of the rise in the price of natural gas. Most Texas power plants run on natural gas, so many customers are paying 50% more for their electric bills than at this time a year ago. Natural gas prices are up more than 200% since Russia, a major gas producer, invaded Ukraine in February. Texas, the top domestic producer of natural gas, is trying to meet demand both at home and abroad. Record heat in the spring and summer is also driving up electric bills.
