Governor Abbott has settled on a date for a special election to fill the now open District 34 congressional seat. The governor announced yesterday that the election would be held on June 14th. Candidates for the special election have until April 13th to file with the Secretary of State, with early voting to start at the end of May. Democratic Congressman Filemon Vela of Brownsville stepped down Thursday to take a position in the private sector. He had already announced that he would not seek re-election this fall.
