Nine Democrats are in the running to replace a long-term Dallas congresswoman who has announced her retirement. Few Democrats dared to challenge U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson over the years, but the 85-year-old politician's upcoming retirement has touched off a flood of aspiring successors to the seat. Johnson helped draw Texas' 30th Congressional District as a state legislator in the early '90s, and has been the district's only federal representative. Whoever wins the Democratic primary this spring will likely win in the November general election, since the predominantly black district is heavily Democratic.
