Austin police are investigating three separate murders that were reported in a 24-hour stretch on Monday. The three killings boost the city's murder death toll to a record-shattering 82 this year. Austin's previous record for murders in a single year was in 1984, when 59 homicides were reported. Austin Police Department records go back to 1960, and since that time, the city had an average of 36 murders a year. Austin residents last week voted no to Proposition A, which called for the hiring of more police officers.
