The president of Afghanistan has left his country as the Taliban has entered the outskirts of the capital of Kabul. Refugees and foreigners are racing to get out of the country as thousands of American troops are assisting with the evacuation. Smoke can be seen rising from the grounds of the US Embassy as sensitive documents are being burned. Those who are remaining fear that the Taliban will re-impose the kind of brutal government that had eliminated women’s rights and imposed Sharia law. The Taliban has seized almost the entire country over the past week, despite two decades and nearly one trillion dollars to build up the Afghanistan’s security forces following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
