The third annual "Safe for Swimming" report from Environment America says Houston-area beaches are contaminated with fecal matter more often than not. Galveston County beaches usually have the cleanest water in the region. Brazoria County beaches, especially Surfside, don't fare as well. Same with Sylvan Beach in Harris County. The Texas General Land Office's Texas Beach Watch program monitors water quality at beaches in Brazoria, Galveston, Harris, and other counties. The map at TexasBeachWatch.com shows the results.
