Texas STAAR test results are showing proficiency drops in almost every subject, WOAI reports
The Texas Education Agency says students did poorer in every subject except for English One and Two. Math proficiency levels in elementary school students took a major drop compared to 2019 with around 37% of third through eighth graders not meeting standards.
Clay Robison with the Texas State Teacher's Association says virtual learning was a bust
"This shows that we do not need to expand the virtual learning network in Texas permanently," he tells WOAI's Michael Board
TEA Commissioner Mike Morath says virtual learning was the biggest cause of the proficiency drops while praising districts which had more in-person learning. He also encouraged parents to go to TexasAssessment.gov to get more information on supporting student academic growth.
STAAR tests were not done last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
