Donors Threatened To Pull Funds If UT Stopped Playing School Song

Emails show University of Texas athletics boosters threatened to stop donating money if the school stopped playing its school song.

The Texas Tribune reports the emails were sent to UT-Austin President Jay Hartzell complaining about football players refusing to stand on the field for "The Eyes of Texas" after last year's loss to Oklahoma.

The Longhorn Alumni Band Charitable Fund warned Hartzell one donor wanted to pull a seven-figure donation. African-American players and students complained about the song because it had been performed by white students in blackface during minstrel shows in the early 1900s.
