Paxton: Criminal Suspects Can't Be Convicted In Absentia

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is ruling criminal suspects can't be convicted without being in court. Paxton issued the opinion today in response to a request by Bexar County DA Joe Gonzales. Gonzales had asked Paxton last summer whether U.S. Postal Service officials could be tried and convicted on Texas Election Code violations regarding the removal of mailboxes. Paxton says there are "multiple factual determinations" regarding potential charges against federal officials. He also noted it's outside the scope of the opinion process to make a decision.
