Austin City Council Votes To Buy Hotel For Homeless Housing

Ignoring the complaints of neighbors opposed to the idea, the Austin City Council plans to buy a motel to house the homeless. Council members agreed to pay nearly ten-million-dollars for Candlewood Suites, near U.S. 183 and the Texas 45 toll road in Northwest Austin. The council was going to vote on the matter last week, but postponed it until this week so a new council member could get up to speed on the issue. Homeowners and businesses near the motel say the city's use for the building will devalue their property and lead to safety issues.
