American Airlines: More Furloughs Possible Without Federal Assistance

American Airlines is giving a warning to its union workers that more furloughs may lie ahead. The Fort Worth-based carrier received federal bailout money in December. After a bump in holiday traffic, an increase in air travel hasn't arrived with the coronavirus vaccines, as airline officials had hoped. The 15 billion dollars in payroll assistance will expire at the end of March, and Congress hasn't yet extended a third round. American furloughed 19 thousand of its 133 thousand employees in October, but put them back to work in December.
