A federal judge is ordering the Texas prison system to provide better pandemic protection at a prison for elderly inmates. Older inmates filed suit in March against the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and the Pack Unit, a prison near College Station for inmates mostly over age 65. U.S. District Judge Keith Ellison ruled Tuesday that prison officials acted with indifference and reckless disregard for the inmates' safety during the pandemic. Ellison ordered the prison system to provide hand sanitizer and other protections.
