A man is dead after opening fire on police inside a Weslaco Walmart this afternoon. The officers returned fire killing the suspect. No one else was injured.
Police say they had been called to the Walmart on reports of a man with a rifle inside the store. When they arrived, the man who appeared to be distraught went to the back of the store. He later put down the rifle, but then grabbed a handgun and started firing at officers. That's when they returned fire. None of the officers were injured and no one in the store was hurt.
"Our response time was two minutes, within those two minutes we had 17 officers and four deputy constables arrive to the scene," Weslaco Police Chief Joel Rivera said.
Texas Rangers were called to help in the investigation.
