Sylvia Garcia is demanding the Department of Defense conduct a full independent investigation into the death of Fort Hood soldier Vanessa Guillen.
The Texas House Representative met with Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy and other officials at the Pentagon today.
Garcia said she is "heartened" that McCarthy will recommend the department to do so.
The secretary will also name a panel of sexual harassment experts to examine the culture of the Fort Hood base, where Guillen was dismembered and killed in April. Domingo Arcia, President of the League of United Latin American Citizens, said Guillen's death exposed a widespread issue of military women suffering abuse.
