Athletes at the University of Texas in Austin are calling for a change. In a statement Friday, the "student-athlete body" asked the university for changes including no longer using the song "The Eyes of Texas," renaming four buildings on campus and to donate part of the athletic department proceeds to the Black Lives Matter movement.
The letter said failure to implement the changes would cause the athletes to not participate in the recruitment of incoming players or other alumni events.
The song "The Eyes of Texas" was first preformed in the early 1900s with characters in blackface. The buildings students are calling to be renamed are named after people who supported racism or were tied to the Confederate movement.
