Mayor Issues Curfew For Downtown Following Vandalism During Protests

What began as a peaceful protest in downtown San Antonio turned violent with a group running through the streets breaking windows and looting businesses last night.

Business across the street from the Alamo and at nearby Rivercenter Mall were damaged. Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets in an effort to break up the vandals, who were also throwing rocks at officers. Three police officers were injured.

Police Chief William McManus later said he believed many of the those causing the trouble were from out of town.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg later issued a curfew for downtown San Antonio from 11:30 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday and from 10 p.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday.
