State Sales Taxes Down Sharply As A Result Of Coronavirus Shutdowns

State revenues from sales taxes are down sharply as a result of the coronavirus shutdowns. Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar said the state's portion of sales taxes for April dropped more than nine-percent from a year ago. Hegar says it was the worst decline since the recession of more than ten years ago, and May's revenues are likely to be even worse. In addition to lost sales tax revenues, Texas is also dealing with severely depressed oil prices. City budgets and the state budget are expected to be hit hard by the one-two punch.
