Bexar County Deputy Dies, Tested Positive For COVID-19

A 27-year veteran of the Bexar County Sheriff's Office has died and the Sheriff's Department says it may have been coronavirus related.

53-year-old Timothy De La Fuente had been tested for COVID-19 earlier this week. At the time, he was said to be feeling fine, but then became ill yesterday. He died this morning before being told he had tested positive for the virus.

Sheriff Javier Salazar said, "I have every intention to lay him to rest with full honors."

Sheriff Salazar says more than 40 deputies have tested positive for coronavirus so far. More than 100 inmates have also tested positive.

Sheriff Salazar said he wasn't able to go into further details, but Deputy De La Fuente had underlying health issues that may have been a contributing factor. The sheriff says the deputy had been assaulted in the line of duty about three years ago and had dealt with health issues as a result.
