TDCJ Stops Accepting County Jail Inmate Transfers

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice is no longer receiving inmates from county jails as of today. TDCJ Executive Director Bryan Collier sent a letter to county sheriffs notifying them of the decision, which comes after the coronavirus started to spread through the state jail system. The state disaster declaration issued last month waives statutory time requirements that apply to the transfer of county jail inmates into TDCJ facilities.
