Harris County woman killed by celebratory gunfire

Accident or crime scene cordon tape

A Harris County woman was killed by what sheriff's investigators believe was celebratory gunfire. The 61-year-old woman was standing outside her home with her family shortly after midnight watching fireworks when she was shot in the neck. It happened on May Laurel road near Laurel Oaks Drive in north Harris County.

Investigators say they have no indication that anyone in the family or the cul-de-sac was discharging any weapons. They walked the streets and canvassed up and down to see if they could find any shell casings but didn't find anything. Investigators say it is likely the shot came from another neighborhood where someone was shooting into the air to celebrate the New Year. The investigation continues.
