New State Law Gets Tough With Porch Pirates

Cardboard package left at front door

A new state law that took effect September 1st empowers police to get tough with porch package thieves. The law allows local police to investigate the cases and refer them for prosecution by the state. Previously, police had to send mail theft cases to the Postmaster General. Postal officials say this is their busiest week of the year, with about 28-million package deliveries a day, providing an enticement for porch pirates. But this year, for the first time, suspects can be arrested instead of ticketed, and fines and jail time could result.
