House Democrats are drafting formal articles of impeachment against President Trump. Speaking at the Capitol, Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler said Trump will be charged with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The New York Democrat argued that Trump betrayed the nation's trust and endangered U.S. national security by pressuring Ukraine to interfere in the 2020 election. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called it a solemn day. Nadler said the Judiciary Committee will consider the articles of impeachment later this week.
The chairs of several House committees joined Nadler and Pelosi for the announcement. Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff said Trump's actions have left the House with no choice. The California Democrat insisted that Trump solicited a foreign power to announce investigations of Democrats, to get Ukraine to help his re-election. Schiff said Trump jeopardized the security of the next election. He argued that the "facts are not seriously contested."
