Ice Causes Major Problems on Area Roads, More Cold Weather Coming

Bridges on major overpasses in San Antonio and in the Hill Country were closed this morning due to ice accumulations, as the worst winter storm of the season spread icy conditions across the region.

From the National Weather Service:

  • Winter Weather Advisory and Wind Advisory have been allowed to expire.

Area of Concern:

  • Low Wind Chills:  All of South Central Texas
  • Rain/Sleet Mix: Areas along and south of Del Rio-San Antonio-Schulenburg line
  • First Freeze of Season: Atascosa, Wilson, Karnes, DeWitt Counties

Timing & Impacts:

  • Wind Chill: Teens across the Hill Country and 20s elsewhere through 9 AM.
    • Those exposed to a long duration of the low wind chills without proper clothing protection could suffer cold-related illnesses
  • Potential Ice Accumulations: Minor ice accumulations on elevated surfaces through 9 AM.
  • First Freeze:11 PM Tuesday to 9 AM Wednesday   

Overview:

The rain/sleet mix will continue to exit the region to the south through 9 AM with only minor ice accumulation expected through 9 AM. No precipitation is expected across the region after that through Wednesday. Locations that have not yet experienced a freeze yet this season may see one Wednesday morning, but cloud cover will ultimately affect whether or not these locations freeze.
