The Austin Independent School District has approved new sex education curriculum.
In a lengthy meeting in Austin Monday night, the AISD approved the new curriculum that will impact students in grades 3 through 8. School officials say the curriculum plan will include lessons on gender identity and sexual orientation. o
Opposing sides held rallies outside the district headquarters prior to the meeting. The meeting went until after midnight until the board approved the plan. The school district said parents will have the option to opt their children out from the sex-ed lessons.
The sex-ed lessons begin next year.
