A recording of a secret meeting between Texas House Speaker Dennis Bonnen and a conservative activist are being made public. Empower Texans CEO Michael Quinn Sullivan posted the audio on his website this morning. Sullivan published 64 minutes of audio on his website. What he says is an unedited version of the recording is below. The audio includes Bonnen saying he wants to win in November 2020 while also suggesting there were some Republican primaries Sullivan could get involved in. Bonnen also makes disparaging comments about some Democrats including calling one "vile" and using an expletive to describe another. The audio also has Bonnen suggesting he'll put Sullivan's news organization on the House floor and remove another reporter. Sullivan says the recording proves there was an attempted pay for play. Bonnen has apologized for saying "horrible things" and says no laws were broken. After the audio was released, Bonnen released the following statement: “I have repeatedly called for the recording to be released because it will be immediately clear that no laws were broken. This was nothing more than a political discussion – the problem is that I had it with that guy. My colleagues have always deserved the facts and context this recording provides, and with clear evidence now disproving allegations of criminal wrongdoing, the House can finally move on.” Bonnen also noted he had "had it" with Sullivan.
