Research presented today at the 75th Scientific Congress of the American Society or Reproductive medicine indicates that women who's male partners consume marijuana more than once a week are twice as likely to suffer miscarriages, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
Dr. Matthew Retzloff, a fertility expert with the Fertility Center of San Antonio, who is at the Congress, told News Radio 1200 WOAI this information is very powerful.
"As the question of legalization of marijuana use is expanded, we see more of these studies looking at what the impact of that increases use are," he said.
The study used data on more than 1400 couples across North America. Researchers determined that 'frequent marijuana use' has an adverse effect on sperm quality.
The study showed no association with miscarriage for men who consumer marijuana less than once a week.
"This emphasizes the need to have this discussion, as we will see more and more couples using marijuana as legalization is accepted in more and more states."
