Acting Customs and Border Protection chief John Sanders is stepping down. He sent a letter of resignation to acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan this week. The resignation takes effect on July 5th and he offered no reason for his departure. The resignation comes as the Customs and Border Patrol agency deals with accusations of poor living conditions at U.S. border facilities. Sanders replaced McAleenan at Customs in the spring after McAleenan was appointed to the homeland security post. That followed the resignation of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.
