Armed Mexican police, soldiers, and migration officials have blocked hundreds of migrants crossing the border from Guatemala into Mexico. The migrants were part of a caravan heading into southern Mexico on Wednesday. Dozens were detained. The action is seen as a toughening of Mexico's efforts to reduce the flow of Central American migrants. Many are seeking asylum from violence and poverty in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras.
This comes as Mexican officials are in Washington for talks with Trump administration officials. The talks are Mexico's efforts to head off five-percent tariffs on all Mexican imports President Trump is threatening to impose on Monday. Trump says he'll slap rising tariffs on Mexican imports unless it stops migrants who are overwhelming U.S. agents at the border with Mexico.
