At least two people have been confirmed dead after a powerful tornado ripped through central Oklahoma. El Reno Mayor Matt White says 16 people were transported to the hospital to receive treatment for injuries ranging from minor to critical. Another 13 were transported by private vehicles. Search and rescue crews are still digging through the rubble in search of other survivors who may be trapped. All guests at the American Budget Value Inn that was struck by the tornado have been accounted for. The National Weather Service classified the tornado an least EF3. The tornado was about 75 yards wide at its widest point and was on the ground for 2.2 miles. It began at about 10:28 Saturday night and lasted just 4 minutes.
Yesterday's deadly tornado in Oklahoma comes on the heels of several days of severe weather in the area, responsible for severe flooding that affected many in the community. Experts determined nearly 36-million people are still at risk today for more severe weather as storms continue to hammer the region.
In addition to tornadoes hitting El Reno, a tornado was also reported in the town of Sapulpa near Tulsa. On its Facebook page, the Sapulpa Police Department said the city was hit by a tornado and work is underway to cleanup areas as downed power lines and trees are reported around town. Additionally, police say they've received reports of ruptured gas lines and water main breaks.
