Tornado hits Abilene

Significant storm damage is reported in Abilene, Texas. Numerous structures were damaged as a tornadic storm blew through.

Congressman Jodey Arrington issued the following statement, "I know folks from all across West Texas are concerned about our friends in Abilene given the severe weather and apparent tornado that damaged part of the City,” said Arrington. “I spoke with Mayor Anthony Williams and other local officials and was encouraged to learn that there were no reported injuries or fatalities. Please continue to pray for those who have been affected by the storm.”

Mayor Anthony Williams signed an emergency declaration as a result of the damage. Overnight shelter was set up for Abilene residents displaced by this morning’s severe weather. The Salvation Army (1726 Butternut), and GV Daniels Recreation Center (541 North 8th), are available to those who have had to evacuate their home. Abilene Police will be conducting security patrols overnight and as long as is required to insure the protection of property and safety of those affected by today’s severe weather.

The city said, "Donations to support the relief effort can most effectively be made to the Community Foundation of Abilene at www.cfabilene.org."

The National Weather Service is to send a team on Sunday to assess the damage.
