Abbott Moves Emergency Supplies to North Texas, S.A. Storm Chances 'Slight'

Gov. Abbott has ordered additional emergency resources to be deployed to North Texas, as the Dallas Ft. Worth area continues to be pounded by tornadoes and flooding rains, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Among the resources deployed include 13 high water rescue boats and crews, and six emergency helicopters.

“As severe weather moves into the North Texas area, the state is taking every precaution including pre-positioning helicopters and boats to ensure we are ready to assist local officials with potential search and rescue operations,” said Governor Abbott. “I urge all residents to stay up to date on local weather reports and heed warnings from local officials throughout this severe weather event.”

Several tornadoes have been reported in north Texas over the past few days, and the serious weather is expected to continue in the area thorugh Friday.

Here is the latest on the San Antonio area's weather situation from the National Weather Service.

Headline:

Slight Risk of Severe Storms for most of South-Central Texas This Afternoon and Evening

Area of Concern:

All of South-Central Texas

Threats & Impacts:

Tornadoes: Isolated tornadoes possible mainly west of I-35

Winds: Wind gusts in excess of 60 MPH possible

Hail: Hail in excess of 2 inches in diameter will be possible mainly west of I-35 with hail in excess of an inch possible across most of the area.

Rainfall: Locally heavy rain in excess of 1-2" will be possible within the heavier thunderstorms. This could lead to flooding of some low-lying areas and roadways.

Timing and Overview:

The forecast the previous two days was highly uncertain due to many small-scale features that were unresolved. The boundary that separates cool and warm air has been in North Texas the past 48 hours, but is currently moving south aided by a line of showers and thunderstorms. In addition, a cold front in the Texas Panhandle will also move south today. Confidence is higher today that thunderstorms will affect the area as activity re-fires this afternoon along these boundaries. Most of the area is in a slight risk of severe storms except for the Coastal Plain counties which are in a marginal risk. Exact placements of the boundaries will have a direct impact on types and locations of severe weather, but there is a risk of isolated tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds today. The better risk for tornadoes and very large hail will be west of I-35. Thunderstorm intensity should weaken for any lingering activity after midnight.

Confidence:

Moderate
