Three years after he was unceremoniously removed as President of the University of the Incarnate Word for using politically incorrect expressions to refer to students attending a back-to-school luncheon, UIW has honored long time President Dr. Lou Agnese with a statue in the university's Friendship Garden, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
To say Dr. Agnese was a driving force behind the University would be an understatement. In 31 years as President, Agnese expanded the student population at UIW by ten times. He is credited with turning what used to be known as 'The College' from a niche school into a nationally recognized university, which PhD programs in a wide variety of subjects, and campuses throughout South and Central Texas, Mexico and Europe.
The Medical School which was the long time dream of Dr. Agnese opened last school year. UIW also launched its football program under Agnese's leadership which has now been moved to Division One.
“Having a bronze statue of you and not being under it is always a nice thing,” quipped Dr. Agnese. “My children grew up here on this campus. Mickey and I lived here on campus for many years and our grandkids grew up here. This place is very much a part of our family and our legacy.”
