IKEA Live Oak Welcomes Thousands at Grand Opening

Thousands camped out and lined up around the new San Antonio-area IKEA that opened in Live Oak on Wednesday morning.

The store is located on the southwest corner of Interstate 35 and Loop 1604.

“We got here at 1 a.m.,” UTSA student Aaron Campos said.

The Swedish chain furniture store announced in February 2018 that a groundbreaking would occur the following spring. The store was estimated to be 290,000 square feet in size, built on 800,000 square feet of retail space.

In August, management announced the store was going to open earlier than expected, and in December it was announced the store would open in February 2019.

“It’s something new that we don’t have in San Antonio, and it can contribute to what we have here. IKEA is something that’s kind of cheap and still efficient, especially for college kids like us,” Campos said.

The store has provided several park and ride spots to accommodate customers and employees.

It is the company’s 49th store in the country and 5th location in Texas.
