As is not unusual when the temps fall into the thirties, firefighters were kept busy battling house fires overnight, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
The first alarm came in about 2AM in the 400 block of Rosewood, which is in the 'deco district' near Hildebrand and Fredericksburg.
Heavy smoke was coming out of a detached building behind the home.
Firefighters were able to confine the damage to the out-building, with only smoke damage to the main house.
The family in the house was already standing outside in the cold morning when firefighters arrived.. Arson investigators have been called in.
About twenty minutes later, firefighters were called to a home near Loop 410 and Harry Wurzbach, where they arrived to find flames shooting out of the side wall of the home.
A woman in her 50s told firefighters she had just plugged in a space heater, and a short in the plug was ruled to be the cause of the fire.
She got out okay and is staying with neighbors.
The fire was contained to the bedroom side of the house.
