San Marcos police are investigating an officer involved shooting that left a Canyon Lake man dead.
Just after 9:30 p.m. Friday San Marcos Police Department dispatchers received a call about a man shooting at a vehicle on the 100 block of South LBJ Drive. Dispatchers shared the description of the man with the two responding officers.
Bystanders told police the man got into a vehicle and fled the scene. Within a few minutes, officers spotted the fleeing vehicle traveling west on West Hopkins Street. Officers pulled the vehicle over at the intersection of West Hopkins and Bishop Streets.
Police say when the vehicle stopped, the passenger got out and faced the officers. The officers said the man matched the description the caller provided earlier.
Officers issued verbal commands telling 27-year-old John Camacho to keep his hands up. Police say Camacho initially complied, but then lowered his hands and reached for his waistband. Police say Camacho grasped a pistol and began to pull upward on it.
The two officers fired at Camacho. He was hit and died at the scene.
Officers later determined that the pistol was a pellet pistol manufactured to look identical to a semi-automatic handgun.
The investigation continues.
