The defending World Series champion Astros scored four runs in the ninth to defeat the Red Sox 7-2 in the opener of the ALCS in Boston. Justin Verlander worked six innings of two-hit ball to claim the victory. Yuli Gurriel hit a three-run homer and Josh Reddick a solo shot in the ninth to break the game open. Carlos Correa's RBI-single in the sixth put Houston up 3-2. Red Sox starter Chris Sale allowed one hit over four innings, but walked four. Joe Kelly absorbed the loss. Mitch Moreland walked with the bases loaded and Jackie Bradley Junior scored on a wild pitch for the Boston runs in the fifth.
