SAFD Opens Training Center in Memory of Fallen Firefighter

The San Antonio Fire Deparmtent has opened a new training facility, and named it in honor of Firefighter Scott Deem, who was killed fighting an arson fire at a northwest side strip center last May, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

"Every time someone comes here, they will understand the commitment we have to never let Scott's loss be in vain," Fire Chief Charles Hood said.

He says the training center will teach firefighters to take on the most serious of fires, like the one that killed Deem, where smoke and flames suddenly flash up inside a burning building.

Mayor Ron NIrenberg says this sort of training is essential toward keeping firefighters safe, and protecting the city.

"This facility is a testament to the constant improvement that the Fire Department of San Antonio continues to make," he said.

Hood says the first training took place at the Deem Training Facility this week.
