West Side Neighbors Track Down Driver in Fatal Hit and Run

One woman is dead and a second clinging to life after they were run over on a west side street overnight, by a pickup police say was travelling 70 miles an hour in a residential neighborhood, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Police say the wreck happened on West Martin and Brazos Streets, just west of downtown.The driver of the red pickup truck tried to speed away, but neighbors wouldn't let him.

Some wrote down his license plate number and called police, while others actually jumped into their cars and followed the man, boxing him in in his driveway in the 3600 block of Martin about two miles away, until police arrived.

Jorge Valdez, 31, has been charged with two counts of leaving the scene and failure to render aid, and is held on $175,000 bond.

One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, the other, identified as Adrienne de la Pena, 38, was rushed to the hospital in extremely critical condition with life threatening injuries.
