McAllen "Active Mall Shooting" Claim was Jewelry Store Robbery

What was first reported as an active shooter in La Plaza Mall in McAllen, in the Rio Grande Valley, Saturday afternoon turned out to be a bungled jewelry store robbery attempt, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

What came in to police as active gunfire was actually the sound of robbers smashing the jewelry store cases.

McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez said the situation is under control.

"We are investigating a robbery attempt at a jewelry store at LaPlaza Mall," Rodriguez said in a statement to 1200 WOAI News.. "All known suspects are in custody.. No injuries involved.. Reports of shots fired  are attributed to the smashing of glass cases."

He says the Deutsch and Deutsch Jewelry store was the scene of the robbery attempt.

Social media contributed to the panic, with several people falsely tweeting that there were multiple people shot at the mall.

Video from the scene showed several men in custody.
