Fiesta is over, but one of the city's biggest river parades is set for this weekend, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
The annual Armed Forces River Parade will celebrate the U.S. military, with floats celebrating all branches of the service, and entertainment by the Air Force Band of the West and other military bands.
Karen Rolirad, a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel and deputy director of the city's Military Affairs Office, says it is appropriate to celebrate Armed Forces Day during San Antonio's tricentennial, because it was a Spanish soldier, on an expedition to keep the French out of Spanish Texas, who first explored the site of what is now San Antonio.
"It was from that first soldier that erupted into five bases at one time that filled this city," she said.
And she said even though you may not be in the military, the military presence is a bigger deal in the city than you even realize.
"One in eight people within San Antonio, in your neighborhood, is actually associated with the military."
The Grand Marshal of the 2016 Armed Forces River Parade will be former Green Beret, and former University of Texas and NFL player Nate Boyer.
