Bexar Deputy Shoots, Kills Armed Assailant

Bexar County Sheriffs Deputies shot and killed an armed man Saturday morning after he emerged from a north side field cursing and firing at them with a large caliber handgun, Sheriff Javier Salazar said.

He said deputies were called to the wooded area along Highway 211 in west Bexar County on a report of a family disturbance.

When they arrived they were told that a 59 year old man had told relatives that he planned to kill himself, and then ran into the wooded area where arriving deputies head a single gunshot.

They saw the man laying down and thought the man had shot himself, but Salazar said the man then got up and started cursing the deputies, then fired several shots.

Deputies scrambled to get the mans relatives who were present to safety.  They ordered the man to drop the gun, but Salazar said when he refused, a deputy shot him.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.  No bystanders or deputies were hurt.
