S.A. Council Scraps GOP Convention Bid

The San Antonio City Council, in a session that was closed to the media and the public, decided late Thursday not to make a bid to host the 2020 Republican National Convention, News Radio 1200 WOAI news reporys.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg said politics didnt enter into the decision.  He says there simply wasnt the will by Council to move forward with a bid.

There has been speculation that the bid itself could cost the City $70 million dollars, plus the costs of security.

There was also opposition from local groups that claimed hosting a convention that is likely to renominate President Trump could damage the citys relationship with Mexico, a country Mr Trump routinely criticizes over illegal immigration.
