SAPD Officers Shoot Man in Downtown Hotel

A frightening morning for guests in one Riverwalk hotel this morning, as cops shot and killed a man who was breaking into rooms, Newsradio 1200 WOAI reports.

"They get off the elevator and as soon as they turned the corner, they entered the man with the gun.  Shots were fired.  He went down," Chief William McManus said of the SAPD Bike Patrol and Park Patrol officers who confronted the man.

The man was pronounced dead on the scene.

It happened on the seventh floor of the Embassy Suites Hotel at Houston and Soledad in the heart of downtown.

The man was seen in the lobby and then he ran up to the fifth floor where he produced a gun and tried to force his way into a room," McManus said. "From the fifth floor he went up to the seventh floor.

McManus said the man was armed with a .45 pistol.

McManus says the man was not a guest in the hotel, and he has no indication why he was in the hotel.

No guests were hurt, and neither of the officers was hurt.
