11 Homeless, 1 Injured in Spectacular East Side Fire

Eleven people had to run out into the street with only the clothes on their backs early today was a spectacular fire ripped through a large east side home that had been cut up into apartments, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

One person was seriously injured in the fire, in the 1000 block of South Hackberry Street.

When firefighters arrived, the two story home was already engulfed in flames, and firefighters decided to evacuate all of the residents and then 'go defensive,' which means to focus mainly on making sure the fire didn't spread in the gusty winds.

Arson investigators are on the scene to try to determine how the fire started.

At one point, the fire spread to a CPS Energy power line.

The Red Cross is helping the eleven people who lost everything find a new place to stay.
