Bexar County Leads Texas--By Far---in Crashes Caused by Texting

A new study by AAA Texas says Bexar County leads the state in the percentage of people who text and drive, and a new campaign is set to counter that, News Radio 1200 WOAI.

Spokesman Daniel Armbruster says this is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and AAA is starting a new campaign called 'Are You In-Text-icated.'  He says it aims to reach people who would never think of getting behind the wheel while they are drunk, but routinely text while driving.

"This is a major problem in Texas," he said.  "In fact, Bexar County has more distracted driving crashes than any other county in Texas."

Bexar County is so far ahead of the other major urban counties in Texas it is scary.  Bexar County reported 26,300 crashes in 2016 that were caused totally or in part by distracted driving.  That is up more than 6% from 2015.

The next biggest county for distracted driving crashes was Harris County with 14,000 crashes.

"This campaign is targeting drivers who would never consider having a beer behind the wheel, but regularly engage with their mobile devices."

Expect to see the campaign on billboards, on line, and in other media throughout the month.
