Spring Birth Season Overwhelming San Antonio Animal Care Services

Spring is the time of new beginnings and new life, and sometimes all that new life can get out of hand, like is happening now at San Antonio's Animal Care Services, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Spokeswoman Lisa Norwood says no much new life has wound up on their doorstep in the form of litters of puppies and kitties, that they are asking for help from the public.

"We have a lot of litters of puppies and kittens that are coming into the shelter," she said.  "While we obviously always encourage people to take advantage of spay-neuter in the community, we know there are litters that are already born that are going to be coming into the shelter.

"Norwood says ACS is putting out an urgent call for donations from the public.  She says what they need the most is blankets, towels, heating pads, and small glass or plastic jars with lids that can be used for animal food.

"We do have an Amazon wish list that people can check out," she said.  "It is the official San Antonio Animal Care Services Amazon wish list."

Or she says people who have old blankets or towels stuffed into a closet somewhere can just drive by ACS on Highway 151 on the west side near the San Antonio Food Bank and drop them off.

She says something ACS would really appreciate is for people to step forward to agree to become foster families for these little babies.

"We always need fosters to help us provide that home outside of the shelter for the puppies and kittens that come in."

She says fostering is for a short time, to give the little babies the opportunity to grow up in a home and not in a kennel, so they will be more adoptable when they get older.

Norwood says ACS will provide foster families with all the supplies they need to get these puppies and kitties off to a good life of purring and tail wagging.
